Why are we all such fanatical fans : Actually I think the 'fanatical' role - or label - was foisted on us by the sheer irrationality and disproportionate vileness of those who didn't share our tastes. For me, I just always loved the music, and couldn't really comprehend why some of the critics were so foul, or why so many ordinary people required me to defend my taste in music as if they found it some kind of a threat. And I DID defend it, but to me that makes me the reasonable one, not the fanatic. I never liked jazz, but I don't go around telling jazz fans it's all rubbish, or hoping jazz music would stop being made, and then labelling jazz fans fanatical weirdos for taking no notice of me and liking it anyway. Fanatics normally attempt to force others to adopt their values. That description fits the critics better than us fans. If someone attacks something you like, and without proper cause, you will naturally defend it. And if they attack harder, you will defend harder. It's just ego preservation really.
